An item found washed up on a beach in Maryport has been confirmed as ordnance after being reported by a member of the public.

Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Teams were called to the south shore at Maryport yesteday.

The team said what looked like ordnance turned out to be correct, and the item was handed to explosives experts to deal with.

In a separate callout, coastguard teams from Maryport, Whitehaven and Brough were sent to Silloth after another suspected piece of washed-up ordnance was reported by a member of the public.

That item turned out to be a large gas canister.

It has been moved above the high tide mark and taped up ready for the council to collect.

Coastguard teams are urging anyone who finds something washed up on a beach that could potentially be ordnance not to try to move or touch it.
