Northern has released a travel advice for today, with a change in regular scheduling expected..
There were no trains operating on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and services were disrupted on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 December due to planned engineering works by Network Rail.
An amended timetable is in operation today following the rejection of an enhanced pay deal for conductors by RMT union members to work on Sundays.
Matt Rice, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “With fewer people using the network, the Christmas period is an opportunity for Network Rail to carry out a range of engineering work.
"As such, we advise customers to ‘check before you travel’ as close to the date and time of travel as possible to see if their journey is affected."
Owen Roberts is from Northern too, he said: "Our advice is to check before you travel. We have an amended time table today so customers should visit journey planners.
"Customers can travel with other operators either 2 hours before or after their cancelled train. We have ticket acceptance in place with other operators where that is needed.
"We have agreements. For example with trans pennine. It's important customers check the details of this though or they can speak to staff at stations."
Recently Northern issued an appeal for customers to treat their staff with respect as part of a new campaign against anti-social behaviour.
It comes as the train operator revealed there have been 182 public order offences committed against its staff during 2024.
Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
