Cancer patients in north Cumbria have expressed their appreciation for local healthcare services through a recent national survey.

The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2025, overseen by NHS England, reveals that patient experiences at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) have consistently exceeded national expectations.

Participants in the survey highlighted clear communication, strong teamwork, and high-quality support during their cancer journeys.

Notably, 89% of patients said treatment options were explained in an understandable manner, while 95% felt the care team collaborated effectively.

Furthermore, 93% reported having a clear main point of contact, with 98% finding the advice provided useful.

Another 95% mentioned sufficient privacy when receiving diagnostic test results.

Overall, NCIC was rated 9.1 out of 10, surpassing the national average of 8.9.

Staff Dedication and Improvement Journey

Kiyla Murray, Lead Cancer Nurse, emphasised the importance of these results, stating:

“These results are a real testament to the dedication of our staff. Patients are telling us that they feel listened to, supported and clearly informed at every stage of their care. That’s exactly the experience we want every person to have."

Vanessa Connor, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, noted improvements:

“We’ve been on a significant improvement journey, and that’s reflected here but also in the fact that patients are being seen and treated much more quickly."

According to Connor, patients also felt well supported during hospital stays, with strong scores for discussing worries, controlling pain, and receiving clear information when leaving hospital.

Progress and Future Goals

In May, NCIC was recognised as the 5th most improved Trust for delivering diagnoses within 28 days, which supports faster treatment and improved outcomes.

Connor added: “We’ve made great progress with the cancer care our patients in Cumbria receive. We’re proud of this progress, however we know some of our patients have waited too long and there is still more to do."

The Cancer Patient Experience Survey aims to monitor progress, drive local improvements, support commissioners and providers, and inform charities and patient groups.
