New Balance opens wellbeing garden for workers at Flimby factory in Cumbria
Unique space celebrates craftsmanship behind Made in UK trainers
Global sports brand New Balance has invested in the wellbeing of its Flimby factory workers by creating its first-ever employee wellbeing garden.
Situated by the factory in Cumbria, the garden offers a tranquil outdoor space where staff can rest, reflect, and reconnect during their working day.
This initiative acknowledges the craftsmanship underpinning New Balance's Made in UK collection, central to its manufacturing heritage.
Flimby Factory Heritage
New Balance has operated its Made in UK line from the Flimby factory since 1991.
The site employs around 300 skilled workers to produce approximately 30,000 pairs of trainers each month, maintaining a commitment to UK manufacturing over 40 years.
Designed by London-based jewellery designer Bleue Burnham, the garden draws inspiration from the Lake District, featuring wildflower planting, cherry trees, and bird boxes to support local wildlife.
Launch and Purpose
The Flimby Garden debuts on 29th July 2026, exclusively for New Balance employees, providing a restorative environment away from the production floor.
Reflecting New Balance’s belief in the connection between craftsmanship and worker wellbeing, the project complements their legacy as one of few footwear brands supporting domestic manufacturing in both the UK and US.
Seating areas and communal spaces within the garden invite employees to pause and unwind amid the natural setting, designed to evolve throughout the seasons.
The initiative underscores New Balance’s ongoing commitment to the factories, communities, and skilled makers sustaining its brand heritage.
