Minor earthquake shakes Cumbria in early hours

Residents report loud rumble and house trembling

People living in a part of Cumbria were woking by an earthquake in the early hours of this morning.

An earthquake of magnitude 2.2 occurred at 4:48 am.

The tremor, with a depth of 3km, affected areas around Sedbergh and was recorded by several seismic stations, including those at Ingleton, Selside, Carlton, Slaidburn, Winston, and Skipton.

Reports from residents described a 'loud rumble', vibrations, 'house creaking', and a 'trembling felt'.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the event, which was mild in scale but noticeable to those nearby.
