Miguel Azeez reflects on journey after signing with Carlisle United
Midfielder speaks on career path following transfer from Morecambe
Carlisle United have confirmed the acquisition of midfielder Miguel Azeez from Morecambe, securing the 23-year-old on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
Azeez began his football journey at Arsenal, where he joined the club at the tender age of five and went on to sign professional terms in September 2019. His senior debut came on 10th December 2020, in a UEFA Europa League match against Dundalk.
Despite his promising performances in youth football, game time in Arsenal's first team remained limited, prompting loan moves to Championship sides Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, as well as a stint with UD Ibiza.
He's now speaking out on his difficult path back to the English game, having felt misunderstood at previous clubs.
In February 2024, Azeez made a permanent switch to Spain's CD Atlético Baleares, featuring in 14 matches and contributing one goal and an assist. His European journey continued with PAS Giannina in Greece in August 2024, where he scored once in 15 appearances.
He said: "I think there's too many clones in football, too many people want to be the same.
"It happened to me at Arsenal, I was singled out, because of how I was as a person. I was doing the same thing I do now, training hard and doing the extras.
"However, because I was slightly different, I got looked at a certain way.
"People need to learn how to treat people as well as footballers.
"I'm just being myself and if that's looked at a certain way then so be it. I think it's important to be yourself, be humble, work hard and just be a good person. If you are not hurting anybody then there is no issue...
"...Mental strength is one of the main things about how to keep going when times are tough. How do I keep focussed, do my best on a Tuesday and Saturday.
Returning to English football, Azeez signed for Morecambe on 24th August 2025, delivering seven goal contributions over 40 appearances and even captaining the team on ten occasions.
His experience extends to international youth football, having represented England from under-16s through to under-20s.
Carlisle United's Head Coach, Rob Elliot, has emphasised the qualities Azeez brings to the team, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen the midfield. Sporting Director Marc Tierney echoed these sentiments, highlighting Azeez's potential and the value he adds to the squad.
