Every school in West Cumbria will have access to NHS mental health support starting in November, according to an announcement by Josh MacAlister MP.

The expansion involves adding two more Mental Health Support Teams to the existing three teams already serving 31 schools in the Copeland and Allerdale areas.

These new teams will cover an additional 38 schools, ensuring all schools in West Cumbria benefit from early intervention services.

Mental Health Support Teams are designed to work closely with schools, students, and families to address emerging mental health issues.

They provide early intervention and help schools adopt a comprehensive approach to emotional wellbeing while strengthening connections with specialised NHS mental health services.

Research indicates these teams have made a significant impact, with over 90% of schools reporting enhanced student mental health and wellbeing.

Additionally, around 70% have observed improvements in attendance due to the support offered.

Josh MacAlister MP has expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating that early intervention can significantly benefit young people by preventing minor issues from becoming crises.

He emphasised the importance of good mental health in education, noting that supported students are more likely to attend school, build positive relationships, and achieve their potential.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance children's mental health through earlier intervention, identifying issues promptly, and diminishing the need for more intensive specialist services in the future.
