A discovery of over 11-and-a-half kilograms of cocaine and 37 grams of heroin in a car on the M6 in Cumbria has led to a 44-month prison sentence for a 39-year-old man from Paisley.

The incident occurred on 31st December 2025 when police stopped a Vauxhall Insignia traveling northbound between junctions 39 and 40.

During a search, officers found a cardboard box in the boot containing bricks of cocaine, each weighing between 1.1 kilograms and 1.2 kilograms.

In addition to the cocaine, tests revealed a brown powder in the vehicle to be heroin.

The driver, Mark McAvoy of Millarston Avenue, Paisley, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

He admitted to the offences in court and was sentenced on 19th February at Carlisle Crown Court.

Detective Constable Hugh Poward emphasized the impact of the vehicle stop, saying:

“This is the latest example of our officers stopping a vehicle travelling through the county and uncovering evidence of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs offences.

“This stop resulted in a significant amount of drugs being recovered and a prison sentence being handed down by the courts.”

Police remain vigilant on local roads, actively looking out for drug-related activities.

Members of the community are encouraged to report suspected drug supply.
