A 60-year-old man has died after being hit by a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway during Storm Boelo.

Scottish police said it happened on a minor road near Castle Douglas at around 10.30am this morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Power cuts and disruption in Cumbria

Elsewhere, Cumbria Police said it is working with partner agencies, including Electricity North West, to support communities affected by disruption caused by the storm.

The force said just under 10,000 premises across Cumbria experienced power outages overnight.

Electricity North West is working to restore supplies as quickly and as safely as possible.

Cumbria Police said many of the roads affected by high winds over the past 24 hours have been cleared.

However, the force said it is still receiving reports of fallen trees and debris on roads across the county.

High winds are expected to continue until later tonight, and drivers are being asked to take extra care.

Cumbria Police is asking people to only travel if necessary, allow extra time and drive to the conditions.

The force said debris, fallen trees and power outages could continue to affect travel, particularly on exposed routes and in rural areas.

People are also being encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and family, particularly if they have been affected by power cuts.

The force said making sure they have access to essential medication, food and other supplies can make a significant difference while services are restored.

Electricity North West and partner agencies are providing welfare support to vulnerable customers and those facing prolonged outages. Details are on the Electricity North West Storm Boelo information page.
