A man has died after falling from a mountain ridge on Blencathra.

It happened on Saturday afternoon.

Keswick Mountain Rescue said a group of four hikers were on Sharp Edge when one of them fell to the north side of the ridge.

Rescue teams from Keswick and Penrith were called out and split into two groups to help find the man. One group went to escort the others down off the ridge while the other went to look for the man.

Sadly the man did not survive the fall.

Keswick Mountain Rescue said:

"Many thanks to Coastguard R199 and Penrith Mountain Rescue Team for their response and support.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to the man’s friends and family."

Cumbria Police said:

"Police were called at 1.38pm on July 5 following concern for a man who had been in a fall on Blencathra.

"The man, aged in his twenties, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."
