Man arrested after grenade scare in Newton-in-Furness

A man has been arrested after a major emergency response in Newton-in-Furness when suspected hand grenades were discovered at a house.

Police were called just after 11 o’clock yesterday morning (26 August) by Ministry of Defence officers, after items resembling grenades were found at the address.

Cumbria Police, fire crews and paramedics all attended, with bomb disposal experts brought in from Catterick to examine the objects.

A 100 hundred metre cordon was put in place and around 19 homes were evacuated as a precaution.

After assessment, the devices were found to be inert and posed no danger.

A 62-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of placing an article with intent to cause fear of an explosion.

He has since been released on bail.

The cordon was lifted by 5:30pm, allowing families back into their homes.

Police have thanked people in Newton-in-Furness for their patience and cooperation during the disruption.
