A man has appeared in court accused of raping a woman in Carlisle earlier this year.

Thirty-year-old Hamid Korom faces one charge. This alleges that Korom raped a woman on 14th February when the woman was not consenting to an alleged act, and he did not reasonably believe that she was consenting to it.

When Korom appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today (tues) he confirmed his name, date of birth and address — Summerhill, London Road in the city — from the dock.

He did not formally enter a plea to the charge, which is classed as “indictable only” and is so serious that it can only be dealt with at a crown court.

During a 10-minute hearing, a prosecutor gave a brief outline of the allegation.

Korom’s case was sent to Carlisle Crown Court. He is due to attend a plea and trial preparation hearing in front of a judge on 2nd June.

In the meantime he was remanded in custody by a district judge. No application for bail was made by a solicitor acting on the defendant’s behalf.
