Plans for a new industrial hub at the Leconfield Estate in Cleator Moor have been submitted for planning approval, aiming to support start-up and early-stage businesses in advanced manufacturing, robotics, and AI.

The proposal, backed by Cumberland Council and the Industrial Solutions Hub (iSH), is part of the Cleator Moor Town Deal, with additional support from Sellafield Ltd and NDA.

Bob Metcalfe, Chair of the Cleator Moor Town Deal, expressed his enthusiasm about the development, stating that it marks an important milestone with potential to benefit the local economy and community.

The initiative is a part of the wider regeneration strategy across West Cumbria by iSH, which focuses on economic growth in robotics, manufacturing, and digital sectors. iSH Managing Director Gary McKeating emphasized the hub's role in fostering collaboration between industry, academia, and innovators to tackle real-world challenges and boost the region's economy.

The hub is designed to offer high-quality workspaces, shared facilities, and collaboration areas to support the growth of new businesses locally, enhancing West Cumbria's skills base.

According to Tracey West at Sellafield Ltd, they and NDA contributed over £10 million to the project, leveraging significant government investment. She affirmed Sellafield Ltd's commitment to economic regeneration and town development.

The proposed hub will focus on regeneration, working alongside existing and new businesses, and include features such as flexible workspace units, research and innovation space, and low-carbon design elements for sustainability.
