Cumbria business devastated by suspected arson attack
Larch Cottage Nurseries potting shed destroyed in late-night blaze as business thanks fire service and neighbours for quick response
Larch Cottage Nurseries in Melkinthorpe has lamented a "senseless arson attack" in the early hours of Wednesday (15th October) which destroyed the original potting shed at the heart of the family business.
The shed was burned to the ground, but the nursery said nobody was hurt in the incident.
In a post on social media, Larch Cottage Nurseries said: "Last night we were sadly the target of a deliberate arson attack.
"The original potting shed where the business started, and more recently used by our children as their sheep shed and storage for their bikes and toys was burnt to the ground.
"Thankfully no one was hurt, but such a sad way to conclude our 40th year. We would like to thank the fire brigade and especially our neighbours for their swift action last night.
"Would be also grateful for any information to help solve this senseless attack."
Cumbria Police said the incident is being treated as a suspected arson at this time, and enquiries are being carried out.
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said they were called at 3.05am to a fire "involving an outbuilding of a commercial property on the access road to Melkinthorpe from the C3046.
"Fire engines from Lazonby and Penrith fire stations attended and firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
"Crews were in attendance for about one hour 45 minutes."
Police and the nursery are urging anyone with information to come forward.
