Local sites sought for affordable housing in Lake District
Lake District National Park Authority initiates call for development site proposals
The Lake District National Park Authority has launched an initiative to identify potential development sites to support affordable housing and community infrastructure needs.
Starting today, a ‘call for sites’ invites the public to propose land that could be utilised for housing, employment spaces, and other community facilities. This effort is part of the preparation for the Lake District's new Local Plan, with public consultation being a key element.
The last call for sites resulted in development in Ambleside, where Penrith-based Atkinson Homes, together with Home Group, constructed 22 affordable homes along with 16 local occupancy houses and two principal homes.
Phil Drane, Team Leader for Strategy and Policy at Lake District National Park Authority, emphasized: "We want to hear what people think should be included in the plan and what land might be suitable for future development, like affordable housing. Many local families, couples and individuals are in need of reasonably priced homes and we urge landowners and members of the public to contact us with ideas. Alongside houses, we are looking for sites suitable for offices, creative workspaces, retail and tourism. We’re looking for sites of all sizes."
To participate, stakeholders can submit site proposals through the Local Plan webpage. The deadlines for submissions are 26th March 2027 for site proposals and 21st October 2026 for the scoping consultation. In January 2027, a wider public consultation will allow the general public to contribute ideas on shaping the Local Plan and future developments within the National Park.
