Lake District unveils five-year deer management strategy to balance wildlife and landscape
Collaborative approach seeks to address ecological challenges posed by rising deer numbers
The Lake District has introduced a strategic plan aimed at managing deer populations and preserving the landscape over the next five years.
Developed by the Lake District National Park Authority alongside authorities such as Natural England, Forestry Commission, Forestry England, and other local organisations, this strategy seeks an evidence-led, collaborative approach involving landowners, environmentalists, and deer experts.
Native red and roe deer, integral to the Lake District's cultural and natural heritage, have seen significant population growth, presenting challenges including woodland damage, hindered tree regeneration, and soil degradation.
High densities also contribute to increased road accidents, crop and garden damage, and ticks transmitting diseases.
To regulate deer populations sustainably, five goals shape the strategy's delivery:
Communication aims to share clear messages fostering understanding of deer management across the Lake District.
Collaboration encourages joint efforts among landowners, farmers, and deer managers to enhance skills and infrastructure for effective landscape-scale management.
Data and evidence focus on reinforcing local knowledge through research and practical techniques like drone surveys.
Adaptability combines local experiences and scientific evidence to support effective, flexible management.

Cath Johnson, Natural Environment Adviser at the Lake District National Park Authority, emphasised the need to tackle environmental challenges while safeguarding native deer.
“Rising deer numbers present significant environmental and land-management challenges across the National Park," she said.
Alastair Boston, Deer Officer from Forestry Commission, highlighted the strategy's alignment with national policies, offering opportunities for enhancing the landscape through sustainable practices.
“We are pleased to have worked alongside the Lake District National Park Authority and partners to develop this new deer strategy and to see it come to fruition," he said.
