Increased uptake in free bus passes connects Cumberland residents
Over 10,000 additional NoWcards issued in the last year
Thousands of residents across Cumberland are benefiting from free bus travel thanks to a rise in NoWcard bus pass applications.
An additional 10,000 NoWcards have been issued by Cumberland Council over the past year, providing more people with access to free travel across the region.
The NoWcard allows eligible older people and residents with disabilities to enjoy free bus rides.
Between April 2025 and March 2026, around 53,000 pass holders made over 2.1 million journeys, showcasing the scheme's success in promoting independence and connectivity.
Eligible residents can use their NoWcards from 9.30am to 11.00pm during weekdays, and all-day on weekends and bank holidays.
The initiative supports residents in accessing essential services such as healthcare and shopping and staying connected with their communities.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“This is fantastic news and shows just how much our free bus travel scheme is helping people across Cumberland stay connected and independent.
“Seeing thousands more residents benefit, and over two million journeys being made, really highlights the difference this is making to everyday lives – whether that’s getting to appointments, visiting friends and family, or simply getting out and about.
“With our improved Cumberland Go network offering more routes and better connections, it’s now even easier for people to make the most of their bus pass and travel confidently across the area.”
Pass holders are encouraged to utilise the Cumberland Go bus routes, facilitating easier travel across the area.

Residents nearing state pension age or eligible due to a disability are encouraged to apply for a free bus pass through the Cumberland Council's website.
Support with applications is available at local libraries in Whitehaven, Workington, and Carlisle.
