Grasmere Sports, one of the English Lake District's most beloved traditional events, will be free for all visitors in 2026, according to organisers.

On Sunday, 30th August, entry will be entirely free, with attendees paying a modest parking fee instead.

This move aims to assist families in managing rising costs while enjoying the cultural and sporting spectacle in Cumbria.

Having taken place for over 170 years, the annual Sports features traditional disciplines like Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, fell running, and tug of war, alongside the recently permanent paragliding races run with Cumbria Soaring Club.

Visitors can also enjoy the ever-popular dog show and hound racing, with presentations starting at 4.30pm.

Entertainment includes circus acts and funfair activities with The Wonder Wheelers showcasing unusual bicycles, and Drum Nation and Circus Avago offering interactive performances and skills like juggling and tightrope walking.

Paul Abbott, Chair of Grasmere Sports, expressed the organisers' dedication to maintaining affordability: "By removing the entry fee, we’re making it easier for families to come along and experience these wonderful traditional Lakeland sports. If you can arrive by bus, walk, or cycle, you’ll be able to enjoy the Sports completely free. We want to see as many people as possible enjoying this unique day in the heart of the Lakes."

Over 1,000 parking spaces will be available for those who drive, although sustainable travel is encouraged.

The event officially opens at 9am with proceedings starting after the Bellman's traditional opening at 10am.

Local MP Tim Farron, a regular participant in the fell running event, applauded the initiative: "Grasmere Sports is a jewel in the crown of our local calendar and a brilliant celebration of our heritage. I’m delighted that more families will now be able to come along without worrying about the cost."

Grasmere Sports continues to uphold Lakeland culture by preserving traditional sports while attracting thousands of visitors annually, fostering community participation and ensuring sustainability.
