Pioneer Park to benefit from new framework designed to boost jobs and economic growth.

Pioneer Park in West Cumbria has been highlighted as a priority location for the development of the UK’s next generation of advanced nuclear technologies.

The Government has announced a new Advanced Nuclear Framework aimed at accelerating projects, creating high-quality jobs, and contributing to long-term local economic growth.

Development of a masterplan for Pioneer Park will begin this month with the process led by local partners and overseen by the Cumberland Nuclear Future Board.

Government backing for advanced nuclear projects

The Advanced Nuclear Framework introduces a national pipeline for credible advanced nuclear projects and offers a “concierge-style” support service. This includes tailored assistance for developers in navigating the planning, regulatory, and financial processes involved in bringing projects to market.

Josh MacAlister, MP for the area, welcomed the initiative, saying it represents significant progress for West Cumbria.

"This Framework is a major step forward for West Cumbria. It gives us the backing we need from government while putting local leadership firmly in the driving seat," MacAlister said.

Boost for local economy and workforce

Advanced nuclear technologies, including small and advanced modular reactors, could be manufactured in factories, allowing quicker delivery at a lower cost while providing clean power to industries and the grid.

Industry figures, including representatives from BEC and Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster, have praised the Framework for integrating local strengths, ensuring support for existing skilled workers and encouraging business opportunities in West Cumbria.

Dianne Richardson, Chief Executive of Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster, elaborated:

"Pioneer Park represents a pivotal opportunity for West Cumbria as by anchoring new nuclear here we sustain our skilled workforce and create new opportunities for businesses across the region. This in turn supports a resilient local economy and secures benefits that will be felt by families and communities for decades to come."

Next steps for developers

Developers keen to join the national pipeline can apply from March next year, with successful projects receiving in-principle government endorsement and support to move forward rapidly.

The Cumberland Nuclear Future Board will lead the local element of the initiative, ensuring priorities align with community interests and benefit from national backing.
