Two Furness primary schools have been selected to pilot a new free breakfast club partnership programme by the government.

Waberthwaite Primary School and Lindal and Marton Primary School are some of the first in the country to take part in the scheme, according to a Facebook post by Barrow and Furness MP Michelle Scrogham.

The post reads: “The Government has announced a partnership with Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Weetabix to deliver free Best Start breakfast clubs in schools.”

It continues: “Waberthwaite Primary School and Lindal and Marton Primary School are amongst the first schools in the country to pilot the free breakfast club programme, with other schools to follow in the next year.

“The new industry partnership will see the early adopter schools benefit from discounts and free deliveries from today (October 24).”

Half a million more children are expected to benefit from the programme from April 2026 as 2000 new schools will join the scheme at that time.

In a statement, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “We’re rolling out free breakfast clubs, and now we’re going further.

“By joining forces with some of Britain’s most loved food brands, we are making our offer bigger and better – backing our schools, supporting families, and ensuring every child gets the best start in life.”

Food Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle said: “These partnerships are a perfect example of our food strategy in action – making healthy, nutritious food available to families across the country.”

The partnership means schools can provide more affordable breakfast options while freeing up funds for extracurricular activities for board games clubs or sports.
