Flexible bus service improves rural transport options around Penrith
The Extra Mile scheme launches mid-September with free introductory travel
Residents in rural communities around Penrith will soon have improved access to public transport with the launch of a flexible, bookable bus service.
The Extra Mile service, which is funded by the Government's Rural Mobility Fund, will commence operations on Monday, 14th September, with bookings available from 7th September.
Designed as a Digital Demand Responsive Transport (DDRT) service, The Extra Mile allows passengers to book journeys via an app or telephone, ensuring travel flexibility without the restrictions of fixed bus routes and timetables.
The service is expanding following a successful launch in Ulverston, where 367 passenger journeys were undertaken in the first month, and over 500 customers registered for the scheme.
Passengers can select their pick-up and destination points, choosing either an "arrive by" or "leave after" time, and the system provides efficient shared transport, notifying passengers when the vehicle is on its way.
For the first two weeks until Sunday, 27th September, all journeys will be free, offering a special introductory period for new users.
Telephone booking is available Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm, providing accessibility to those who prefer not to use the app.
Cllr Adrian Waite, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Transport, emphasised the benefits of the scheme, which aims to connect residents to employment, education, healthcare, shopping, and leisure opportunities, while reducing isolation and enhancing independence.
"For many people living in our rural villages, getting to work, college, a hospital appointment, the shops or even meeting friends and family can be a real challenge if there isn't a regular bus service available. That's exactly why we're bringing The Extra Mile to the Penrith area," Cllr Adrian Waite said.
The service area covers a 15-mile radius from Penrith town centre, including destinations like Appleby, Great Asby, Shap Wells hotel, Hartsop, Threlkeld, and more.
Operating hours are from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The service will not be available for journeys entirely within Penrith, where alternative public transport options exist.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the two weeks of free travel and experience the convenience The Extra Mile offers.
