First trains run across bridge as West Coast Main Line reopens
That's after the demolition and replacement of the Clifton bridge
Last updated 15th Jan 2026
The West Coast Main line has fully reopened today (15th January).
That's following 14 days of upgrade works, including the demolition and replacement of the Clifton railway bridge in Cumbria.
Network Rail say they managed to carry out dozens of other projects between Preston and the Scottish border during this time.
60 smaller upgrades were also made.
Network Rail and Avanti West Coast have thanks rail passengers for their patience.
