Facial recognition to be used at Carlisle United match for public safety
Cumbria Police to employ technology alongside other security measures at Brunton Park
Last updated 4th Mar 2026
Cumbria Police will deploy Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology at the Carlisle United vs Southend United fixture this Saturday.
The match, taking place at Brunton Park, kicks off at 5.30pm on 7th March.
LFR will be used to help identify individuals wanted for serious offences and those subject to court orders.
The technology will be part of a broader policing operation, including visible patrols and plain-clothes officers, to ensure the safety of fans and the public.
Detective Superintendent Dan St Quintin explained:
“LFR is an extra tool we can deploy and use to help keep people safe by specifically identifying people who are wanted by the police or who are subject of a court order, including an order banning them from attending such an event.
"The cameras have been deployed at similar events in other parts of the country and will aid our efforts to help ensure that those attending the fixture can enjoy the game with their families."
How does LFR work?
LFR operates by comparing faces captured on a live camera feed against a secure watchlist.
This watchlist includes people wanted for serious crimes, subject to court orders, or posing risks to the public or themselves.
If a match is identified, a police officer will confirm the image before deciding to engage with the individual.
Privacy is a priority, and biometric data from non-watchlist individuals is not stored, as it is deleted immediately.
Watchlist images are deleted within 24 hours, and CCTV footage within 31 days, akin to standard public camera policies.
Carlisle United's Finance Director, Suzanne Kidd, expressed her support:
“Our focus at every fixture at Brunton Park is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for supporters, staff and the wider community.
"We work closely with Cumbria Police and our partner agencies to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place, and we recognise the role that developments in technology can play in supporting that approach."
Det Supt St Quintin added:
"With the £10 ticket offer for the fixture, we're expecting a large crowd for the match. This extra measure - put in place in recognition of the larger than usual crowd - will aid our officers in ensuring everyone can enjoy the match safely.
"We hope everyone attending enjoys the game responsibly, whilst supporting their club."
Details of all LFR deployments will be clearly signposted and available on the Constabulary website.
