Pregnant women in North Cumbria are being encouraged to take up the offer of free vaccinations this winter to protect themselves and their babies from serious illnesses.

Midwives at North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) are emphasising the importance of receiving flu, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and whooping cough vaccines during pregnancy.

These vaccinations provide crucial protection during pregnancy, a time when both mother and baby are more vulnerable to severe infections.

Melissa Gildert, a maternity nurse at NCIC, stated, "Getting vaccinated during pregnancy is one of the best ways to protect both yourself and your baby."

Flu vaccinations reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalisation during the winter months.

Pregnancy increases vulnerability to viruses like RSV, which can lead to respiratory conditions such as Bronchiolitis and pneumonia, especially in newborns.

The whooping cough vaccine offers protection against a highly contagious infection that is particularly dangerous in the first few months of life.

Melissa, who is eight months pregnant herself, shared her personal experience and urged expecting mothers to get vaccinated to ensure they and their babies are protected.

Pregnant women will be offered their vaccinations through their community midwife at routine appointments or by booking an appointment at NCIC clinics through the Be Wise Immunise link.

NCIC encourages pregnant women to consult healthcare professionals if they have questions about vaccination.
