Emergency teams rushed to a river near Longtown yesterday morning (19 October) after someone tried to save a goat and ended up in the water.

Fire crews from Carlisle West and East Fire Stations, plus police and paramedics, were all sent after reports of a person struggling in the river.

Thankfully, the individual made it out safely before crews arrived, and there were no lasting effects.

Specially trained teams later managed to guide the goat to safety and recapture it further upstream.

Emergency services are now urging people not to carry out rescues themselves, and to call for help if animals or people are in trouble.
