A Carlisle man caught on camera as he punched and kicked a woman in the street has been warned he could receive a prison sentence.

Daniel McGill, aged 35, claimed he was struck by the woman and left with scratches on his head after they came together and argued on Sunday, 5th July.

Video footage captured by the occupant of a nearby house showed the pair grappling over an electric scooter.

McGill responded by punching the woman, pushing her and then administering a forceful kick to her leg area as he lost his temper.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard today (7 July) how both parties were “heavily affected by drink” when the incident took place.

In court McGill, of Rydal Street, Carlisle, pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman by beating her.

He also admitted breaching a criminal behaviour order — imposed by a court in October, 2024 — by entering the B&am store at St Nicholas Gate, off London Road, on 2nd July.

Police were alerted by a shop security officer at 4-10pm.

Magistrates adjourned the case for preparation of a probation service pre-sentence report, but concluded that all options, including a prison sentence, would remain open.

McGill is due to receive his punishment on 6th August, and in the meantime has been granted conditional bail.
