Chief Fire Officer Paul Hancock is set to step down from his role with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service in June, concluding an 18-month term marked by substantial improvements and changes within the service.

Paul returned from retirement on an interim basis to provide stability, clarity, and direction, while advancing improvements following an HMICFRS inspection.

Having started his fire service career in 1985 in Workington, Hancock progressed through various roles, ultimately serving as Chief Fire Officer for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service from 2009.

He was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service Medal in 2014 and an OBE in 2019 for his contributions to the fire and rescue sector.

Aside from his professional achievements, Hancock has enjoyed a noteworthy rugby career, representing Cumbria and England and Great Britain Fire Services.

Under his leadership, Cumbria Fire & Rescue made substantial progress against its improvement plan, strengthened governance, completed a county-wide operational review, and began preparations for a governance transfer to the Mayor of Cumbria Combined Authority by May 2027.

The transition to Paul Hancock’s temporary successor is slated for 8th June 2026, ensuring continuity of leadership.

Reflecting on his tenure, Hancock expressed pride in the service’s progress and confidence in its future trajectory.

Allen remarked on Hancock’s dedication and professionalism, commending the transformative impact of his leadership on the service and expressing thanks for his decades of commitment.

With gratitude, the community extends best wishes to Paul Hancock for his future endeavours.
