Improvements to Cumberland's C4001 Lowca Road set to enhance safety and accessibility
Works include new raised table, street lighting upgrades, cycle route improvements
Road improvement works on the C4001 Lowca are scheduled to start on Monday 11th May 2026, with the goal of enhancing safety and accessibility along this important local route.
Cumberland Council is collaborating with DSD Construction Limited for these improvements, which are expected to take about five days, subject to weather conditions. The project includes road network and drainage repairs, installation of a new raised table for pedestrian and cyclist safety, street lighting upgrades, cycle route enhancements, and refreshed road markings.
Road Closures and Access
To complete these works efficiently and safely, official road closures will be implemented, with signed diversions in place as needed. Efforts have been made to adjust working hours—now 9am to 6pm—to accommodate school bus schedules, ensuring students can travel to exams on time. Afternoon drop-offs will require buses to use designated diversions.
Emergency service vehicles will maintain full access under blue or green light conditions, and pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will not be restricted during the improvement works. Waste and recycling collections will continue as scheduled, and temporary bus stop relocations will have information posted at affected stops. Passengers are advised to contact Stagecoach for route-specific queries.
Wider Impact and Collaboration
The improvements also form part of Route 72 of the National Cycle Network, known as Hadrian’s Cycleway, linking communities along the Cumberland coast. The enhancements are carried out with funding from National Highways and in partnership with Walk Wheel Cycle Trust. Cumberland Council is working with local stakeholders, including Parish Councils and local members, to mitigate temporary disruptions.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“We’re pleased to be bringing these improvements forward on the C4001 in Lowca, which is an important route for local residents as well as people walking, wheeling and cycling along the coast.
“Health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do, and this scheme reflects that by making it easier and safer for people to travel actively as part of their everyday journeys. The works will help deliver smoother journeys for drivers, improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and strengthen links along Hadrian’s Cycleway.
“While there will be some short‑term disruption while the work is carried out, these upgrades will provide long‑term benefits for the community and support more sustainable travel choices across the area.”
Cumberland Council expresses gratitude for the community's understanding and patience during these necessary improvements and apologises for any inconvenience.
