Cumberland's Remembrance Sunday plans in place
Events will be held throughout the county.
On the build up to this year’s Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, Cumberland Council has launched a new webpage promoting support for the armed forces community.
Additionally, some of their vehicles - including refuse and highways - are also displaying printed poppies and a ‘Lest We Forget’ message. Window stickers are also displaying the message at key buildings within the area, including libraries.
Other activities include:
• Some council buildings are lit red at night-time on the week leading up to Armistice Day (Monday 3 November - Tuesday 11 November).
• The Union flag to be flown from outside Cumbria House, the Civic Centre and the Old Town Hall in Carlisle, the Copeland Centre in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day (Sunday 9 and Tuesday 11 November).
• Any council owned buildings open to the public on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day will commemorate the national two-minute silence at 11am.
Deputy Leader for Cumberland Council, Cllr Lisa Hinton is the Lead Portfolio Holder with responsibility for the Armed Forces, she said: "We are a proud supporter of the armed forces and we have put in place a variety of ways to commemorate this year’s Remembrance events right across Cumberland. Please support the Poppy Appeal and take time to join in the national moments of reflection."
Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Andy Semple added: "I am delighted that the council has taken so many steps to commemorate Remembrance in Cumberland. I will be proud to represent the council at events on the day, and hope many of you are also able to take the time to honour those who served at one of your local Remembrance events."
The Royal British Legion has organised a series of events within the Cumberland area.
These include a Festival of Remembrance at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle on Friday 7 November.
Cumberland Council, town councils and parish councils are also supporting the Royal British Legion. Remembrance events have been organised in towns and villages.
There are also planned Road closures at Harrington, Workington, Millom, Whitehaven, Carlisle and Egremont for Remembrance Parades on Sunday 9 November.
