Smart sensors to gather data on road and pedestrian movement
Innovative AI-powered technology is being implemented by Cumberland Council to enhance the understanding of traffic patterns and support road improvements in the region.
Intelligent traffic sensors will anonymously collect data on how vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians use key routes, helping the council make informed decisions and improve traffic flow.
The initial installations will take place on Devonshire Street and Warwick Road, where smart cameras and sensors will monitor movement in real time.
Designed to maintain privacy, the system uses AI to identify patterns without storing video footage.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo said, “This is a really positive step forward in how we use technology to improve our highways network."
The council will continue exploring smart technology to support safer and more sustainable travel.
