Construction of a brand-new skatepark at Hammond’s Pond is set to begin next week, according to Cumberland Council, as part of its Start with the Park project.

The skatepark, designed in partnership with Canvas, aims to cater for skaters, BMX riders, and scooter users of all ages, with features shaped by input from local groups and a public questionnaire.

Consultations took place in 2025 involving community groups, including The Rock and Carlisle Youth Zone, ensuring the design matches the needs of its future users.

Construction details

The skatepark will be built near the former aviary site at Hammond’s Pond, becoming a key feature of the area. During the construction:

Play areas and park entrances will remain open.

Hoarding will be put up around the site for safety.

Some paths may be blocked, and construction noise is expected.

Larger vehicles will move through the park under strict safety monitoring.

Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: "We are thrilled to bring this new skatepark to Hammond’s Pond. This facility will not only promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people but will also become a vibrant hub where families and individuals can come together, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors.

"We’re grateful to residents for their support during construction and can’t wait to open the skatepark later in the year."

Spring opening planned

The skatepark is expected to be completed by spring 2026. It is one element of the £2.6 million Start with the Park initiative, which is designed to improve green spaces between St Cuthbert’s Garden Village and Carlisle city centre.

The project is funded by Carlisle Town Deal.
