Join community tree planting day for A595 Grizebeck road improvement scheme on 11th March
A chance to contribute to local biodiversity and see behind-the-scenes of the road project
A community tree planting day is set to be held on 11th March 2026, giving local people the opportunity to participate in the A595 Grizebeck improvement scheme.
Attendees are encouraged to plant trees matching the number of people in their household or more.
The planting day aligns with the Council’s ambition to plant 250,000 trees over five years in Westmorland and Furness, equivalent to 'One Tree per Resident'.
Participants will have a rare chance to view parts of the site usually closed to the public, including sections that will become part of the new road.
The £23.3 million scheme, funded by the Department for Transport, involves the creation of a new 0.8-mile single carriageway between Chapels and Grizebeck village, aiming to improve safety and journey times along this key Cumbrian route.
Tree planting is a significant aspect of the initiative, with commitments to enhance local land and water habitats.
Access to the site is a short walk from the Community Hall, where parking is available.
It is recommended to wear weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, and bring a shovel or trowel as these won't be provided.
Councillor Peter Thornton and Councillor Giles Archibald emphasized the importance of community involvement and the environmental benefits of the scheme.
The project continues progressing towards a Summer 2026 completion, with significant work already completed.
Andy Clode, Construction Director for Story Contracting, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support and patience from the local community.
