Cleator Moor plans community hub with planning approval granted
New facilities and improvements set to revitalise town centre
Cleator Moor is set to undergo significant development as plans to create a new community hub have received planning approval.
Part of the Cleator Moor Town Deal, the initiative aims to tackle underutilised buildings and enhance the presentation of the town centre, thereby attracting investors and offering locals new skills and employment opportunities.
The community hub will be created by revamping and linking two existing buildings in the Town Squareāthe library and the former Credit Union building.
A cafƩ annexe with a commercial kitchen will also be added.
The hub's facilities will include spaces for exhibitions and arts, youth services, and improved library resources, such as better reading areas and internet access.
Enhancements to Cleator Moor Town Squareās appearance and ambience will accompany the project.
This programme will see existing sculptures relocated, the Memorial Fountain restored, artworks cleaned and repositioned, and seating areas improved to create a more welcoming environment.
New electric vehicle charging points, bike racks, and CCTV cameras will be installed.
Day Cummins Ltd. has been appointed as the architect for these plans.
These works are scheduled to begin in late spring 2026 and aim for completion by summer 2027.
Bob Metcalfe, Chair of the Cleator Moor Town Deal Board, stated the hub is set to offer high-quality office spaces and showcase community facilities in the heart of Cleator Moor.
The Town Deal has secured £22.5m from the Government's Towns Fund for its four-project programme, which is managed by Cumberland Council.
The refurbishment of the PEC Phase 3 building, another Revitalised Town project component, was completed in December 2025.
The building is fully let, with businesses already operating within its newly improved spaces.
