A man from Whitehaven has been sentenced for assaulting a man with a hammer after allegedly believing he was trying to harm him.

The court heard how 21-year-old Cjay Reynolds Burns started a fight against a father and son who visited his family home.

Burns reportedly reacted aggressively to them both and hit the father with a hammer during the fight.

The victim was hospitalised and had to undergo a brain scan.

Burns also damaged a van belonging to the son.

He pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

He was given an 18-month community order, a two-year restraining order against the men and a 120-day alcohol ban.

He'll be fitted with a tag which will flag if he's drank alcohol.
