Changes to Free School Meal eligibility in Westmorland and Furness
More families can receive support as Universal Credit threshold is removed
Families in Westmorland and Furness are being encouraged to check their eligibility for Free School Meals following changes to the national criteria.
From September 2026, households receiving Universal Credit can apply for Free School Meals regardless of their income.
Previously, many families were excluded due to an earnings threshold.
Now, working families who receive Universal Credit top-up payments may qualify for this support for the first time.
Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, emphasised the importance of this expanded eligibility.
"We want to ensure that every family who is entitled to support receives it. The expansion of Free School Meal eligibility means that many more families, including those who are working and receiving Universal Credit, may now qualify. I encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible to check and apply. Registering for Free School Meals not only helps families with the cost of school meals but can also unlock additional support and funding for schools. You can also pop into any of our Family Hubs and ask for help and information from our friendly teams," Battye said.
However, due to changes in national funding, the WONDE supermarket voucher scheme for school holidays will end for children receiving income-related Free School Meals.
Applications for Free School Meals can be completed online via the Westmorland and Furness Council website.
