Noel Collins sentenced to 67 months for collision with elderly delivery driver.
A man has been sentenced to prison after admitting to causing death by dangerous driving following a collision in Cumbria.
Noel Collins, 35, from Sheernest, Holme, Carnforth, was sentenced to 67 months in prison at Carlisle Crown Court today, 21st October, after pleading guilty to the offence.
The incident occurred at 12:26am on 1st July 2024 when Collins was involved in a collision on the A595 between Mealsgate and Bothel.
The crash resulted in the death of George Jackson, a 75-year-old local man, who was driving a Honda Civic at the time.
Following the collision, Collins denied being the driver despite witnesses placing him at the scene.
He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving on 2nd July 2024.
Cumbria Police's investigation revealed Collins had a history of health issues and misuse of prescription medication, which he failed to disclose to authorities.
Evidence showed he had previously crashed vehicles, failed to disclose medical information, and ignored medical advice not to drive.
Detective Sergeant Deborah Story described Collins' behaviour as self-serving, highlighting the distress caused to Mr Jackson's family.
Cumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit commended the courage of the victim's family and the witnesses who contributed to the investigation.
The case underscores the importance of notifying driving authorities about relevant health and drug misuse issues.
