Carlisle railway station redevelopment set for planning review
Council to consider major new car park proposal.
A proposal for significant redevelopment around Carlisle railway station is expected to progress if approved by Cumberland Council's planning committee next week.
The planned project forms part of the council’s 'Southern Gateway' initiative targeting the space between Water Street and James Street.
Station Road Business Park could undergo redevelopment to include a new 239-space car park, which would become the primary parking area for the railway station.
Councillors will convene at The Civic Centre in Carlisle on Wednesday, 15th April, to deliberate the proposal.
An officer's report suggests approving the application with conditions.
The site, mostly consisting of previously developed land, has been marked by former structures including the 1970s Pools building and a former retail unit, Staples.
The location, owned by Network Rail and Cumberland Council, sits directly south of Citadel Station and Carlisle city centre and is bounded by major streets and a viaduct.
Citadel Station, a Grade II* listed building, is the most substantial structure in the vicinity.
Its detached west wall, also listed Grade II, serves as a retaining wall for platforms and frames the main facade looking southward.
Nearby Turkish Baths are also noted as Grade II listed, with no modification proposed as part of the application.
The planned car park offers 239 spaces, comprising various accessible, enlarged, and EV bays, alongside landscaped features and tree planting.
