Carlisle Station receive £13.5 million in funding
The funding comes from the Department for Transport to support the Carlisle Station Gateway Project
£13.504 million is being invested in Carlisle’s railway station and the surrounding areas.
Network Rail's been given funding by the Department for Transport for upgrades at George Square, Court Square and inside the station.
The Carlisle Station Gateway Project has already had a £27 million investment from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.
This new funding is hoped to support construction work, operational costs and accessibility improvements.
Over the next two years plans for the station include: a new pub opening in the first-class waiting room on platform 4, a new customer car park, pedestrianised station entrances, new lifts and clearer signage.
Councillor Mark Fryer, the Leader of Cumberland Council and Borderlands Partnership Board member, said: "This investment is a major step forward for Carlisle’s regeneration.
"The Carlisle Station Gateway Project will not only transform the station environment but also create opportunities for economic growth and improved connectivity for residents and visitors alike.
"It is positive to see further investment on the back of the initial Borderlands Deal funding.
“These enhanced facilities will continue the station’s transformation, creating spaces that are more attractive, accessible, and welcoming, ensuring that when people arrive in Carlisle, they are greeted by a station that reflects the city’s vibrancy and ambition, and sets the tone for exploring everything our area has to offer.”
