A Carlisle man has been sentenced to six years in prison for intentionally setting fire to his own flat.
James McGlinchey, 61, of Denton Street was convicted for arson while being reckless as to whether life was endangered.
On 22nd September 2025, officers were called to Denton Street to address a concern for welfare.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service was already at the scene, dealing with a large fire at the flat.
McGlinchey had left the flat and was being treated by North West Ambulance Service at another address.
He was taken into custody after admitting several statements, including 'Can't believe I set fire to my own flat.'
Temporary Detective Constable Anna Pickthall, speaking on the case, confirmed that McGlinchey made significant remarks at the scene acknowledging his responsibility for the fire.
“Investigations found that McGlinchey had purchased diesel the night before the fire before pouring the accelerant around his flat and setting it alight.”
“His actions could have had fatal consequences and luckily no one was injured and the surrounding flats were evacuated.”
