A Carlisle man has been sentenced to three years in prison for dangerous driving and burglary, which involved ramming a police vehicle multiple times.

Patrick Young, 37, of Firlands, Carlisle was sentenced today, 24th April, for his actions that took place in the early hours of 10th September in the Whitbeck area.

Officers responded to a burglary report that night and reviewed CCTV footage showing two men in a black Mondeo.

During their patrol, officers spotted the vehicle, which had false number plates, trying to evade them.

After illuminating their lights, the Mondeo made off, reversing into the police vehicle 11 times during the pursuit in Croasdale Avenue, Whitehaven.

The car was eventually stopped and two men fled the scene, with Young being detained by officers.

Detective Constable Linzi Wilkinson commented on the case.

ā€œOfficers were able to quickly locate the vehicle believed to be involved in the burglary.

ā€œIn an attempt to evade justice, Young put people’s lives at risk by driving at speed and dangerously.

ā€œHe used his vehicle as a weapon ramming an officer’s vehicle multiple times. Thankfully, the officer involved in the pursuit wasn’t injured.

ā€œWith the seriousness of the offending and the immediate risk to the public, tactical contact was made by the roads policing unit to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion.

ā€œWe hope today sentence sends a message to those looking to target our rural communities, we will bring offenders to justice.ā€

In addition to his prison sentence, Young has been disqualified from driving for 18 months.
