Engineers have temporarily closed the Irish Gate Footbridge in Carlisle following the discovery of a structural defect.

During routine inspection work, a crack was identified in one of the steel components supporting the bridge deck, prompting the closure as a precaution.

While the footbridge is closed, the road below, Castle Way, remains fully open and safe for use.

Investigations Underway

Specialist engineers are conducting detailed investigations to assess the extent of the issue.

The council has yet to provide a timescale for the reopening of the footbridge, emphasising that public safety is their primary concern.

The state further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
