Carlisle fire show starts this evening
The centre piece bonfire is now complete and more than 2,000 spectacular sparkling fireworks, set to music, will also light up the sky.
This year’s Carlisle Fireshow will celebrate Cumberland's maritime history and heritage.
The sparkling event will start at 6.30pm and will be the 36th Fireshow event to be held. It is the biggest event in the region expected to attract more than 35,000 spectators. This year’s event is organised in conjunction with Merlin Fireworks Ltd.
Taste Cumbria will be bringing its food and drink festival to the Cathedral grounds, in the heart of Carlisle, on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November plus live music in the recently revamped Greenmarket.
Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: "This year’s event is one not to be missed. Along with the bonfire and a display of thousands of fireworks, the weekend will also feature the two-day Taste Cumbria event in the Cathedral grounds. Together, these two events are joining forces to create one big blazing weekend of fun for all the family"
Cumbria Police are deploying in greater numbers in Carlisle on for the annual firework show too.
Ahead of the event, police have authorised a dispersal order, which is in place from 12pm to 11:59pm on 1 November in Carlisle City Centre.
The dispersal order gives officers extra powers to ask individuals engaging in anti-social behaviour to leave the area and not return, if they return they risk being arrested.
Officers will be patrolling the area on Saturday to ensure that everyone enjoys the show without disruption.
Inspector Andy Leather from Carlisle Neighbourhood Policing team said: "Unfortunately in previous years we have had incidents of anti-social behaviour in the city centre.
"This behaviour will not be tolerated.
"We have dedicated resources covering the fireworks show at Bitts Park and in the city centre to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night.
"Anyone who is issued a dispersal orders will get a visit from officers at home."
