A burglar who took a selfie on a phone he stole during a Carlisle Rugby Club break-in which occurred as players took part in pre-season training has been spared immediate prison.
The city’s magistrates’ court heard how Kevin Bigg, 41, was spotted both as he entered and emerged from the rugby club, off Warwick Road, on the evening of July 10.
Mobile phones stolen from rugby players were among the loot.
Bigg was later arrested by police and found in possession of other property which had been pinched from the building.
One of the snatched mobile phones was swiftly sold on. But it was later tracked down by its owner. And, the court heard, it emerged that Bigg had also taken a photograph of himself on that stolen device.
Bigg admitted an offence of burglary, having entered the rugby club as a trespasser and stolen a number of personal items of an unknown value.
Magistrates considered the contents of a detailed probation service pre-sentence report and heard mitigation as Bigg, of Fairfield Gardens, Carlisle, was sentenced today (fri).
Bigg was given a two-month jail term which magistrates suspended for 18 months. He must complete up to 20 days of rehabilitation with the probation service, and a nine-month alcohol treatment requirement. He was also ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £154 mandatory surcharge.
