Two individuals have been arrested in Carlisle today after a report of a suspicious item on English Street.

A report was made to officers at 3.42pm, raising suspicions that a person may have been carrying a firearm, wrapped in a plastic bag.

Despite the alarming suggestion, nobody was threatened or harmed during the incident.

As police worked to understand the situation, residents may have noticed a larger-than-usual presence of officers in Carlisle city centre.

Armed officers were dispatched to the scene as a precautionary measure but were stood down shortly after, as there was no perceived threat to public safety.

The item reported to officers was identified as a glass device believed to be used for smoking.

This device, not a firearm, led to two arrests.
