Road improvement works to begin on C4001 in Lowca
The scheme will include drainage repairs, street lighting upgrades, cycle route improvements and a new raised table to improve safety.
Road improvement works are set to begin on the C4001 in Lowca to support safer and smoother journeys for drivers, walkers and cyclists.
Cumberland Council says the scheme is aimed at improving the local road network for residents, businesses and visitors.
The works will be delivered by the council’s contractor, DSD Construction Limited, and are scheduled to start on Monday 11 May 2026.
They are expected to take around five days, subject to weather conditions.
The scheme will include road network and drainage repairs, the installation of a new raised table to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, upgrades to street lighting, cycle route improvements, and the reinstatement and enhancement of road markings.
Cumberland Council says the measures will help improve safety for all road users while strengthening local active travel routes.
The works also form part of Route 72 of the National Cycle Network, also known as Hadrian’s Cycleway.
The route is widely used for walking, wheeling and cycling, linking communities along the Cumberland coast.
To allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently, official road closures will be in place, with signed diversions where required.
The council says it has listened to feedback from schools, parents and residents about the timing of the works during the GCSE exam period.
As a result, working hours have been adjusted to 9am to 6pm, allowing school buses to collect students in the morning and helping pupils travel to exams on time.
During afternoon drop-off periods, school buses will still need to use the official signed diversion, which will remain in place for the duration of the works.
Access will be maintained throughout for emergency service vehicles under blue or green light conditions, as well as for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal.
Information about any temporary bus stop relocations will be displayed at affected stops, and passengers are encouraged to contact Stagecoach directly for route-specific queries.
Cumberland Council says it recognises the C4001 Lowca is an important local route and that some temporary inconvenience may occur while the works are carried out.
The council says it is working closely with local stakeholders, including parish councils and local members, to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said: “We’re pleased to be bringing these improvements forward on the C4001 in Lowca, which is an important route for local residents as well as people walking, wheeling and cycling along the coast.
“Health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do, and this scheme reflects that by making it easier and safer for people to travel actively as part of their everyday journeys.
“The works will help deliver smoother journeys for drivers, improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and strengthen links along Hadrian’s Cycleway.
“While there will be some short-term disruption while the work is carried out, these upgrades will provide long-term benefits for the community and support more sustainable travel choices across the area.”
Cumberland Council has thanked the community for their patience and support while the improvements are delivered, and apologised for any inconvenience caused.
