Brampton man appears in court after being charged with rape

Police are appealing for information and witnesses following the incident

A man has appeared in court after being charged with rape following an incident in Brampton in the early hours of Friday 20 March.

54-year-old Peter Bennett, who lives on Crofton Road in Brampton, was charged with rape and sexual assault by penetration.

The victim, a 16-year-old girl, is being supported by specialist officers.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who may hold any information regarding the incident. Or alternatively, from anyone who was in the area of Sawmill Lane and Stanley Road at around 1am on Friday morning (20 March).

Bennett appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today (21 March) and has been remanded until his next court appearance – at Carlisle Crown Court – on 20 April 2026.
