Heated discussions between the public and local leaders unfolded during a consultation about the £200 million regeneration of Barrow town centre.

The funding, provided by central government and managed by a partnership known as ‘Team Barrow’, includes BAE Systems and Westmorland and Furness Council.

With £20 million per year allocated for developments starting in 2025, many residents are concerned about the visible progress after more than a year.

The closure of Barrow Market and decision to demolish it due to asbestos issues have further fueled frustrations.

A £23 million announcement in August aims to address these issues, proposing a market village, temporary event space, and a programme of arts and culture initiatives.

The first public consultation on Friday allowed locals to explore plans for the 'Heart of Barrow' scheme, central to transforming the area from the town hall through to Dalton Road.

Local councillors and representatives from various organisations were present to field questions, although the fate of the Forum and theatre emerged as particular focal points.

Councillor Derek Brook emphasised the importance of community involvement, while concerns were raised about the long-term future of the town's theatre facilities.

Gareth Candlin, director of planning, highlighted ambitions for a new theatre but stressed financial viability as a priority.

Andrew Bennett, Interim CEO of Team Barrow, expressed positivity about the engagement and acknowledged the cultural importance of a theatre.

A second session is scheduled for today at The Bridge on Portland Walk from 10am to 3pm, offering another opportunity for public input.
