£8.4bn investment in Barrow submarine project boosts jobs and apprenticeships

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to announce an £8.4 billion investment in the UK’s Dreadnought submarine programme during his visit to Barrow-in-Furness today.

The funding aims to support thousands of jobs and offer apprenticeships across the UK, with a focus on the Northwest region, including Barrow and Manchester.

This investment figures the fourth phase of the Dreadnought Class submarine programme, which is expected to bolster national security and stimulate economic growth.

According to government plans, 47,000 British jobs linked to the Defence Nuclear Enterprise could rise to 65,000 by 2030, alongside 22,000 apprenticeships by 2035.

During his visit, the Prime Minister is expected to highlight how taxpayer-funded projects can revitalize communities like Barrow by delivering long-term job opportunities.

Additionally, Andy Burnham is expected to unveil a new apprenticeship scheme aimed at enhancing employment accessibility for young individuals in the Northwest.

This initiative will enable SMEs within the local defence supply chain to employ and train 30 apprentices over three years, following the apprenticeship framework pioneered by BAE Systems in the area.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the importance of the Dreadnought submarines for UK security, remarking on the investment's potential to integrate modern technology with Barrow’s historic traditions.

Delivery Phase 4 will see HMS Dreadnought undergo sea trials to prepare for service with the Royal Navy by the early 2030s, alongside advancements in construction phases for subsequent submarines.

This announcement reflects the government’s commitment to the Strategic Defence Review and maintaining its nuclear deterrent policy.
