Councillors have approved plans for the next phase of Barrow's multi-million pound town centre transformation.

They haven't however committed to replacing the soon-to-be demolished Forum and indoor market hall.

Westmorland and Furness Council's Cabinet have approved Phase 1 of the Heart of Barrow project, which aims to revitalise the area.

Phase 1 focuses on short-term activities to boost the town's economy while preparing for long-term redevelopment, including assembling land needed.

This includes the site of the Forum and indoor market hall after it's demolished.

Last month, following heavy rainfall, tests on water samples showed the presence of asbestos leading to the decision for need for demolition.

The council are looking for £35 million in funding from the Government for the first phase.

In response to residents' concerns over the demolition of the Forum and market hall, Councillor Helen Chaffey said "Speaking on behalf of myself and my Cabinet colleagues, we absolutely believe that Barrow and its surrounding communities deserve a thriving theatre and arts venue.’’

She didn't however commit to a replacement venue.

Cllr Chaffey continued “Phase 2 will see the long-term plans developed with and alongside the local community and we would like to see a new venue included in those plans, but ultimately that would also be subject to Team Barrow approval and funding.

“However, we are committed to ensuring that culture is at the heart of the town centre regeneration and as Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Communities, along with the local MP, I will continue to campaign for a replacement facility to be part of the longer-term vision.’’
