Barrow Island is set to see the launch of a new residents' parking scheme on 1st October, which is designed to improve the availability of on-street parking for residents.

The area will be divided into two zones, Zone A and Zone B, with both incorporating disc zones and resident permit-only areas, as well as designated disabled parking bays.

Cllr Peter Thornton, Cabinet member for Highways and ICT, explained the collaborative effort behind the scheme: "The council has worked with residents, local members and others to develop this scheme to alleviate parking issues in the area. It was really encouraging to see so many residents engaging with the initial engagement and formal consultation and I am sure they will see a difference."

As part of the scheme, resident permit-only areas will be exclusive to permit holders, with Zone A and Zone B permits providing access solely to their respective zones. Residents of eligible properties on Barrow Island have received clock discs via post for the disc zones and can apply for permits.

The initiative follows requests from local councillors and community groups, with Cllrs Dave Cassidy and Anne Burns playing an integral role in the introduction of the scheme through the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

Cllr Burns commented on the scheme's development: "This parking scheme has been developed after consulting and listening to residents, and councillors will now monitor the roll-out and look forward to working with the residents over the next few months."

New signage and road markings are being implemented to delineate the parking zones, following a comprehensive review and consultation process.
